Before putting a blade to the earth, a farmer must understand why they are tilling. The primary objectives are:

- Weed Control: Mechanically uprooting and burying competing weed species before planting.
- Soil Aeration: Breaking up compacted layers to allow oxygen and water to reach deep root zones.

Primary vs. Secondary Tillage
Modern conventional farming divides soil preparation into two distinct phases.
Primary Tillage (The Heavy Lifting)
This is the aggressive, deep working of the soil, usually performed right after the last harvest or at the beginning of a new season. The goal is to shatter compacted soil, aerate the earth deeply, and bury heavy crop residue.
